New stomach cancer research funding opportunities will soon be available through the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program PRCRP). The program is managed by the Department of Defense’s office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The PRCRP has been an essential and consistent source of stomach cancer research funding. Stomach cancer was first eligible for PRCRP funding in Fiscal Year 2015 (FY15). Between FY15 and FY23, 61 stomach cancer research awards have been granted, for a total investment of nearly $44 million.

The PRCRP is committed to supporting early career investigators and innovative research ideas through targeted funding opportunities. The program is employing a new portfolio-guided strategy that will be described during the webinar, along with information about the CDMRP, the PRCRP, and upcoming funding opportunities.

Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer (DDF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support to patients, families, and caregivers worldwide. DDF’s ultimate goal is to make the cure for stomach cancer a reality.

Stomach cancer is the fifth most common type of cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death globally. In 2025, approximately 30,300 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer, and nearly 11,000 will lose their lives to the disease. The overall five-year relative survival rate is 36%, dropping to just 7% for stage IV, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and research. Stomach cancer also disproportionately affects minority populations, with Native American, Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic communities experiencing significantly higher mortality rates compared to White populations.
